"King Rat" by China Mieville
I read King Rat and I'm not entirely sure what the difference between new weird and old weird is  Mieville's descriptions of King Rat introducing Saul to his world where he discovers his own abilities and identity. The writer does a good job describes the smells and tastes very vividly. It may not be quite to everyone's taste.  The books gets very messy at times but  is worth reading for these parts alone - he also adds a nice twist to finish things off.

King Rat Is basically about this guy, and after his father is brutally murdered a young man is dragged into a conflict. Saul Garamond lives in london and is in his mid-twenties. He comes home one night after visiting friends out of town and sneaks into his room to avoid having to talk to his father. Then things get weird...

I watched Serenity (2005) I haven't seen the TV series Firefly that preceded this. This movie was a nice change of the traditional space scifi type film. It had a very deep story and it definitely seems more realistic. However it didn't lack that fiction magic aspect. However throughout the movie I felt as if I was missing information I might have needed to watch the TV show to get. I say, that in a way it is kind of like “Alien” meets “Star Wars” or “The Walking Dead” meets “Star Trek”.
IN CLASS READING: BLOOD CHILD I was kind of confused reading this. What really stuck with me is that these people could eat an egg and it would prolong their life. What there me off during the reading was the new terminology that was used like Tlic, or T'Gatoi, or Terrann or N'Tlic. Every time I would stop because I don't know if this is slang the writer came up with or if these are terms or names. I didn't make a real significant connection with the story because I am a slow reader and didn't get through all of it. But the one silly connection I made was when the protagonist didn't want to slaughter an animal but he was told to do so. I know, I know, thats weird connection to make. But I've never and never will kill an animal. I don't think I would change anything to adopt this story into another medium. However, I would adapt the idea of changing the gender of the person giving birth to  an intricate sigh show, like Star Trek for example.
W13-Apr 12 This week, I watched Existenz (1999) It was interesting because in a way it reminded me of spy kids 3 Funny enough, it was from the same studio, Dimension Films. It had that aspect of this alternate reality game where people entered a video game world. This film was pre digital and I didn't realize this until after but the effects that were in the film were done very nicely. I liked that this felt more like literary work rather than a genre. It felt real in itself rather than sci fi fiction, which it really could have been.
